This wonderful photograph from the Prospect
Park Archives deserves more attention, with its fine detail. More of Edward
E. Rutter's work may be seen in the Brooklyn
Collection at the Brooklyn Public Library.
It's amazing how people survived summer back then- full suits, with jacket, everywhere. At least they wore
hats. The game looks pretty serious for an amateur affair, too. Apparently you didn't
have to be the Dodgers or Royal Giants or Bushwicks to draw a crowd.
This is the kind of love for Brooklyn baseball that we want to see. There's something different about
baseball here than anywhere else, and Rutter's photograph captures it perfectly.
